Creating a special space in Shirley - April 3, 2009 - Newsday
It had been a room to practice for dance and piano recitals, but after its makeover, says homeowner Mary Stone, 34, "I tell the kids this is Mommy's special room." Stone and her husband, Bobby, 40, who owns a restaurant in Queens, hired designer Mary Farina of Room Service Interior Design in Lake Grove to make the room "elegant but casual."

Before the makeover Mary and Bobby Stone's living room was a place for daughter Brianah to practice for piano and dance recitals. Enter, designer Mary Farina of Room Serivde Interior Design in Lake Grove. Farina had helped put together other rooms in the house, including the children's bedrooms and the dining area.
The change is amazing. Same room, totally different ambience. Across the room, a circular mirror creates light and catches the eye.

One of the challenges for the design was the cathedral ceiling. Designer Farina wanted drapery rods that were scaled to the height of the room. The draperies added color and broke the height. The hat-box stack and clock complete the corner.

Rods. From a designer source. $700. (for two)
Living room draperies. Design by Farina; fabric, Duralee of Syosset; fabrication, designer source. $3,500.
Shades. Shangri-La light-filtering shades. $1,600 (for two).
Hat boxes. Set of three from Tuesday Morning, Lake Grove. $45.
Clock. Existing.
The other drapery in the room was for the larger window. The room was repainted, and new furniture purchased.

Paint. Three cans from Benjamin Moore, Aboffs, Centereach. $100.
Round table. Ethan Allen, Bayport. $900.
Lamp. Existing.
Plant. Michael's, Rocky Point. $100.

One of Bobby Stone's requests was that the couple's wedding photos be displayed in the living room. They perch above a demilune (half circle) table in a dignified corner.

Mary Stone had thought she wanted a chair to anchor the staircase wall, but working with designer Farina she changed to this mirrored table. She had wanted a grandfather clock, and found this version on clearance at Target.

Mirrored table. From HomeGoods, Port Jefferson. $149.
Clock. Target, $12.
The window treatment over the sink and the bay window in the breakfast area match to draw the two areas together.

Kitchen-dining window treatments. Design by Farina, fabric from Duralee, fabrication by a designer-only source. $3,200.

Before the family room, the Stone family redid some bedrooms, including this guest bedroom that became a nursery for Brielle, who is now about 4 months old.
The decorating issue was pink. Bobby Stone didn't want it completely pink, so Marry compromised with a chocolate brown and pink. The crib will become a child-size bed as Brielle grows.

Crib and custom bedding. From buybuy Baby, Huntington. $899.
Window treatment. Designed by Farina; fabric Duralee of Syosset; fabrication, designer-only source. $2,250.

Brianah Stone, 9, liked the pink and green as a color combination, but wanted things a little more grown up.

The Stones' goal was to make a room that was elegant, inviting and yet ready to withstand the wear three children -- Brandin, 11, Brianah, 9, and Brielle, 4 months -- could give it.

Entrance rug. From a designer-only source. $650.
